The building which now houses the National Museum of Art of Catalonia was actually built for the Spanish pavilion for the World's Fair in 1929. There are works from the Catalonian Romanesque and Gothic periods.

Barcelona's political history and popular tradition are exhibited among the three floors of this museum. An interesting feature is that in the cellar are remains of Roman fortifications.

The MACBA is a focal point of Barcelona's culture, besides the magnificent works of art and sculpture dating from the 17th century until today, there are often exhibitions, film specials, seminars and even concerts in the museum. The MACBA is always changing the collections, giving the museum a distinct dynamic, but you can usually find works from Fortuny, Sunyer, Picasso, Susana Solano, Alexander Calder, and Paul Klee.

Pablo Picasso, although born in Malaga (part of the southern Andalusian region of Spain), spent many of his developmental years in Barcelona. The museum is home to several rare, early pieces of Picasso, which look surprising to many as they take quite different form from his Cubist form. This museum is a great place to get a broad view of the artist.

The Joan Mir Foundation houses the most expansive collection of this Catalan artist's works. You can find tapestries, garden sculptures, and an array of the diverse form and color that Mir incorporated into his pieces. There is also a library, auditorium, and regular guest exhibitions and performances.

The museum has exhibits on display of sculptures from 12th - 17th century.
Ethnological Museum

The Ethnological Museum houses several interesting objects and artifacts from Pre- Columbian America, The Philippines, Asia, and Africa. The museum has a permanent collection entitled "Ethnic, from traditional cultures to inter-culturality" and there are other exhibits that are changing from time to time.

Gothic, religious art and paintings are on display, as well as, part of the Roman wall which is part of the actual building.

This museum received the European Museum of the Year Award in 2006. It has similar attractions to other science museums, many interactive, hands-on activities. It is a nice museum for children, and it's also recommended to view the Planetarium.

The Museum of Textile and Industry is an institute that holds the history of textiles, tapestries, lace, civil uniforms, embroideries, accessories, and much more; dating back to the early years of our era to the present day. The museum not only preserves this history, but studies it and hopes to work as a creative outlet for the future of textiles.

Archaeological Museum

Collection of materials dating back to Pre-historical times up to the 7th century, the Balearic culture exposition and Roman mosaics are especially significant.

Maritime Museum

The Maritime Museum, located in a medieval building, houses an important collection about the history of navigation. It includes famous documents like "El Libre del Consolat de Mar" and the oldest known codification of maritime laws.
